FireMon Expands Policy Control Plane for Microsegmentation with Akamai Guardicore Integration

Microsegmentation

FireMon today announced an integration with Akamai Guardicore Segmentation that extends its policy control plane for Microsegmentation. As the pioneer of Network Security Policy Management (NSPM), FireMon offers centralized control for network security rules. Consequently, organizations governing firewall policies across hybrid environments can now apply identical governance and audit rigor to Akamai Guardicore policies. This flawless integration will ensure the effective scaling of zero trust efforts without forming any operational silos.

According to Akamai research, more than 90% of businesses implement at least some kind of segmentation. But only 35% of them deploy Microsegmentation completely. The main hurdles are extremely complex networks and constant visibility challenges. As businesses add advanced security controls, policy management becomes distributed across multiple enforcement layers. Therefore, FireMon brings segmentation rules into a normalized, governed model alongside traditional firewalls and cloud security groups. Consequently, security teams gain broader context to assess policies, troubleshoot changes, and ensure consistent compliance.

Importantly, FireMon does not replace Akamai Guardicore enforcement. Instead, it governs the overarching policy sitting above and across enforcement layers. For enterprises managing multi-vendor environments, Microsegmentation strategy now operates through a unified, governed platform rather than fragmented consoles.

“Zero trust is a policy challenge before it’s an enforcement challenge,” said Jody Brazil, CEO of FireMon. “Microsegmentation platforms are good at enforcement. But if segmentation policy isn’t governed with the same rigor as firewall policy, you end up with strong lateral-movement protection in one place and blind spots everywhere else. This integration closes that gap.”

Centralized Governance for Zero Trust Infrastructure

FireMon includes the Akamai Guardicore product to enable Microsegmentation Policy within its robust data model along with other firewall products and cloud providers. The security operations teams use one interface for checking if the rules of segmentation are working in accordance with the desired result. Moreover, the engineers can test their configuration settings before deploying them into production.

For enterprise environments spanning data centers, public cloud instances, and distributed edge networks, enforcement decisions involve diverse operational teams. Through centralized oversight, deploying Microsegmentation becomes much easier to maintain continuously as infrastructure evolves.

“Akamai Guardicore Segmentation gives customers precise enforcement for Microsegmentation across hybrid environments,” said Misha Yaverbaum, VP Product Management Enterprise Security at Akamai. “Pairing that enforcement with FireMon’s policy governance provides joint customers with a single, governed view across all network controls. Together, we make scaling Zero Trust fast, continuous, and frictionless.”

Industry Realignment Towards Unified Policy Control

Moreover, such an evolution marks the trend in the marketplace towards integration as organizations begin to evolve from point security solutions. It is increasingly becoming necessary for organizations to establish a governance policy framework that will integrate firewalls, clouds, and micro-segmentation.

“Microsegmentation is a critical enforcement capability,” Brazil said. “But it only holds up if policy intent stays aligned as infrastructure keeps changing. That’s the governance layer we’re extending here.”

Ultimately, this joint capability empowers security leaders to scale robust zero trust architectures seamlessly across modern enterprise networks.
