Smiths Detection has launched a remote baggage screening solution to transform cross-border travel between South Korea and the United States. The new solution enables U.S. Customs and Border Protection. To remotely screen-check baggage at Incheon Airport before aircraft arrive in the United States. Moreover, this technology eliminates the need for baggage reclaim and recheck at the first U.S. arrival airport. Under the new process, baggage from or connecting through Incheon Terminal 2 is screened using Smiths Detection’s automated SecurePort-IRBS-K solution. Coupled with HI-SCAN 10080 XCT computed tomography X-ray scanners, the solution provides high-resolution 3D images. Consequently, airports can now identify potential threats more accurately and quickly.
“The deployment of SecurePort-IRBS-K at Incheon marks. A defining moment for the global aviation security industry,” said Sunghoon Eom, Country Manager, South Korea, Smiths Detection. “This is the first time a fully automated, DICOS-based baggage screening workflow has been executed between two sovereign countries.” “Incheon’s leadership and Smiths Detection’s vision made this milestone possible.”
Cymoril Métivier, Global Digital Portfolio Director. Smiths Detection added, “IRBS is more than a system; it is a blueprint for the future of aviation.” “By leveraging the performance of the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT and advanced digital connectivity. Incheon International Airport Corporation has shown how airports can scale securely, eliminate friction points, and redefine the international passenger experience.” “This model will shape global airport strategies for years to come.”
Advancing Secure and Seamless International Travel
Consequently, this remote baggage screening solution reduces the time to connect by a maximum of 20 minutes for some flights. Which is a major improvement for air travellers. This remote baggage screening solution started its operations on the Atlanta route. But it is expected to be rolled out in other cities like Minneapolis, Seattle, Los Angeles, Detroit, & Salt Lake City. The functional solution was rolled out in August 2025 after it received certification from various bodies. Including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of Korea and the U.S. CBP. This remote baggage screening solution further enhances the position of Smiths Detection in providing secure and efficient travel.
