AWS Unveils European Sovereign Cloud to Strengthen EU Data Sovereignty

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has rolled out its new European Sovereign Cloud. Designed for businesses and the government that want a higher level of European data sovereignty. The cloud operates fully within the European Union. The European Sovereign Cloud is a standalone system separate from the global AWS network and fully complies with European data sovereignty rules. Additionally, AWS has ambitious expansion plans in the rest of the European markets. AWS has already begun developing the first sovereign cloud location in Brandenburg, Germany. AWS also has plans for AWS Local Zones in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Portugal.

By building a cloud that is European in its infrastructure, operations, and governance.  We’re empowering organisations to innovate with confidence while maintaining complete control over their digital assets.”

Strengthening Local Governance and Digital Trust

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will function without any control beyond the boundaries of the EU. In addition, it will ensure that all the data, metadata, and identity management systems are within the EU. This will enable customers to transform their workloads without having to worry about the performance level. The company will establish local governance led by EU citizens to ensure full compliance with the European Union’s legal frameworks.  Industry collaborations such as SUSE and Akkodis have shown their support for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. They will enable EU customers to implement secure and sovereign solutions. The development of the AWS ecosystem, therefore, is expected to enhance cloud adoption. Digital trust among EU businesses that have strict requirements relating to the protection of data.
