James Tool Achieves NIST 800-171 Self-Certification for Data Security Standards

James Tool

James Tool Machine and Engineering, Inc. has officially achieved self-certification under the NIST SP 800‑171 framework. It is reinforcing its commitment to robust data security standards.

According to the announcement, the precision machining company’s systems, processes, and technology now meet federal standards for handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

Based in Morganton, North Carolina, James Tool serves aerospace, automotive, nuclear, and transportation industries through advanced machining services and custom workholding. The company’s president, Jeff Toner, described the achievement as a “testament to our deliberate approach to cybersecurity”. Also, assured clients of confidence in protecting classified and sensitive information.

The NIST 800-171 standard outlines more than 110 security controls across fourteen families targeted at safeguarding CUI in non-federal systems. By achieving self-certification, James Tool asserts that it has implemented the required controls. It has positioned itself favourably for contracting with federal entities such as the Department of Defense. Also, the General Services Administration and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Why this matters

Manufacturers who handle sensitive defence-related information increasingly must demonstrate compliance with NIST 800-171. For subcontractors and precision engineering firms, it is now a prerequisite in many supply chains. In this context, James Tool’s self-certification means it can reduce procurement barriers, streamline contract eligibility, and highlight its secure data-handling capability to customers.

What this means for James Tool and its clients

Moving forward, James Tool can claim readiness to protect CUI, bolster trust with defense and aerospace clients. Also, potentially win more complex contracts. Clients working with James Tool gain higher assurance that their sensitive data is managed under recognised standards. In sum, this milestone strengthens the company’s competitive position in highly regulated sectors.
