The development of AI Defense Operations will be furthered through the continued relationship between Nokia Defense and NestAI, who have entered into a technological collaboration to address resilient communications, AI for the battlefield, and sensing technologies for Europe’s defense forces. Furthermore, this partnership stems from
Nokia and Tesi’s recent €100 million investment in NestAI, which was revealed in November 2025.
With increasing defense budgets in Europe, military organizations have continued to embrace technologies driven by AI. Nonetheless, good communication channels are critical for the success of any warfare operation. Hence, Nokia and NestAI have combined connectivity, detection, and mission planning into a cohesive defense technology.
These partnerships offer three operational capabilities. First, the 5G network by Nokia that is mobile connects to NestOS to improve command and control. This also allows the system to have the capability for autonomous operations without being too dependent on communications infrastructure. Second, the models from Nokia radio-network planning are added into NestOS mission planning. This allows defense teams to evaluate connectivity and avoid coverage gaps during multidomain missions. Finally, the integrated sensing and communications by Nokia are used together with multi-sensor tracking by NestAI.
These technologies address denied communications, electronic attacks, and emerging drone threats. Furthermore, the solutions are developed in Europe and meet NATO operational requirements. AI Defense Operations remain central to the partnership’s strategy for strengthening future military readiness.
“Defense is moving quickly to adopt AI-enabled capabilities, from mission planning to unmanned operations. But AI only works in the field when it has secure, resilient connectivity behind it. Together with NestAI, Nokia is accelerating the sovereign technologies NATO needs to operate, decide and act in the next generation of missions,” said Mikko Hautala, Chief Geopolitical & Government Relations Officer and Chairman, Nokia Defense.
“Most defense AI is built on assumptions about connectivity, sensor access, and infrastructure that do not hold in contested environments. What we are building with Nokia addresses the real conditions European forces face, from the network underneath to the threats at the edge, on technology that Europe develops and controls,” said Peter Sarlin, Founder and Executive Chairman, NestAI.
