HPE Earns Its First AMD Helios Order in $1.2 Billion Deal With Vultr

AMD Helios

HPE secured a massive $1.2 billion infrastructure deal with Vultr today. Under this agreement, Vultr will deploy the AMD Helios system across its U.S. cloud data center facilities. This order represents the first commercial deployment of the AMD Helios platform engineered by HPE. Furthermore, the installation features purpose-built scale-up switching and specialized software. The combined systems will support enterprise model training and complex inferencing workloads. Consequently, this initiative helps Vultr expand high-performance compute capacity for global customers.

“AI is driving the largest infrastructure buildout in history and together with AMD and Vultr, we are building an open foundation to accelerate the next phase of AI,” said Antonio Neri, president and CEO of HPE. “AMD Helios by HPE demonstrates HPE’s unique ability to engineer the complete AI architecture with rack-scale compute, scale-up networking, and direct liquid cooling, all delivered by our global services.”

Deepening Strategic Collaboration for Enterprise AI

This strategic agreement builds on nearly three years of close collaboration between Vultr and Juniper Networks. Moreover, that partnership strengthened significantly after Juniper Networks joined the HPE organization.

“Demand for high-performance AI infrastructure continues to outpace available capacity, and our work with AMD and HPE enables us to bring Helios rack-scale compute and scale-up networking online for customers faster. Together, we’re delivering the memory capacity, interconnect performance, and energy efficiency customers need to run the largest and most demanding AI training and inference workloads,” said J.J. Kardwell, CEO of Vultr.

The enterprise system integrates directly into the broader HPE AI Data Center Solutions portfolio. In addition, engineers designed this stack using open standards to optimize operational costs throughout the AI lifecycle. Therefore, the architecture supports continuous scaling for large-scale enterprise deployments.

Open Architecture and Advanced Networking Capabilities

Engineers designed the AMD Helios system specifically for trillion-parameter model training and rapid inference. Each high-density rack integrates seventy-two AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs alongside AMD EPYC Venice CPUs. Additionally, the setup incorporates AMD Pensando Vulcano AI NICs and ROCm software. The unified hardware layout optimizes power consumption, cooling efficiency, and ongoing serviceability. Meanwhile, it supports open interoperable fabrics like UALink over Ethernet.

High-Performance Switching and Global Deployment Services

This configuration consists of six HPE Juniper Networking QFX5252 scale-up Ethernet switch trays per rack. Such dedicated switches link the GPUs through high-speed, low-latency Ethernet communication protocols. In addition, HPE Services offers professional liquid-cooling installation to reduce possible risks at the implementation stage.

This particular case serves as an excellent demonstration of the overall HPE technology approach. To be more specific, it involves state-of-the-art networking technology, highly dense computing, and direct liquid cooling. Finally, such collaboration brings the Ethernet-based scale-up environment to life.
