Eutelsat has officially reached a historic milestone in European space communications today. The satellite operator completed the First Rendez-Vous phase for the IRIS² initiative. Consequently, industrial execution will accelerate immediately across several major European manufacturing hubs. Furthermore, this major milestone cements Europe’s strategic autonomy in secure satellite communications. This landmark effort delivers next-generation multi-orbit infrastructure to support government and commercial users.
Moreover, Eutelsat will lead the vital Low Earth Orbit segment of the project. The company will design, deploy, and operate the advanced IRIS² constellation. This network features 264 dual Mil-Ka/Ku band satellites alongside 66 Mil-Ka band satellites. In addition, key European industrial partners including Airbus Defence and Space will manufacture the spacecraft. Thales Alenia Space and Aerospacelab will also provide essential manufacturing capacity for the program.
Major Investments and Strategic Capacity Building
Eutelsat will invest significant capital to support the increased scope of IRIS². In particular, the company will invest €2.23 billion in the deployment of shared infrastructure. Eutelsat will also invest €1.16 billion directly in commercial ground and payload systems. The planned capital expenditures will be rolled out progressively between 2027 and 2034. In return, Eutelsat will gain access to more than double the capacity of its existing OneWeb network.
Meanwhile, the financial projections show impressive long-term commercial revenue generation for the satellite firm. Eutelsat expects to generate more than €10 billion of revenues from this capacity through 2040. Further, the IRIS² concession agreement gives important operational rights for the foreseeable future. The operator will deploy the first Ka-only satellites into orbit from 2029. The commercial Ku LEO constellation will be fully operational by mid-2032.
Advanced Technological Integration and Fleet Maintenance
Technologically, the new network incorporates state-of-the-art beamforming antennas and 5G NTN capabilities. Therefore, system architecture dynamically directs bandwidth directly toward regions with the highest user demand. Besides, fiber-optic inter-satellite links dramatically enhance network availability and overall system resilience. This setup also reduces heavy operational reliance on traditional ground station infrastructure. Consequently, clients will utilize smaller, lighter, and far more affordable user terminals.
To ensure uninterrupted service continuity, Eutelsat will continuously strengthen its existing fleet. Specifically, the firm will deploy 229 additional satellites to support the OneWeb network. This fleet extension requires an extra investment of approximately €1 billion through 2034. Meanwhile, this strategic effort builds directly upon 440 previously procured GEN1 satellite units. Additionally, the IRIS² infrastructure will benefit from shared fixed costs and combined research.

The expansion does not change spending plans through fiscal year 2029 while retaining necessary capital efficiency.
