Bitwarden recently released a comprehensive cybersecurity study highlighting a major gap in modern PAM adoption. The report shows that 84% of respondents said that securing privileged account access is very important. But today, more than half of these organizations lack a dedicated security solution. Therefore, this security gap makes critical infrastructure vulnerable to unauthorized access and significant breach threats. But slow adoption of PAM also leaves enterprise systems open to internal and external threats. Security incidents due to overprivileged user access were reported by almost 20% of respondents. Consequently, IT leadership needs to act quickly to fix these operational security vulnerabilities.
Key Barriers to PAM Adoption and Growth
The biggest barrier to broad acceptance of PAM across organizations today is still the high initial cost. Among non-users, 40% cited high pricing as the primary reason for not deploying. And 30% said executive leadership didn’t see the need for security. Another 20 percent of surveyed IT departments are also slowed down by resource constraints.
However, current users are still encountering operational issues with their active platforms. A quarter of active users experience high maintenance costs across their existing environments. 16% of enterprise security managers are frustrated by system complexity and slow deployment cycles. The procurement strategy also has a big impact on the overall PAM adoption choices of modern enterprises. That’s the reason companies often settle for bundled products or established and trusted security vendors.
Strategic PAM Decisions Driven by Compliance Requirements
Regulatory compliance is one of the drivers of enterprise decision-making when organizations evaluate privileged access security measures. In fact, 65% of respondents surveyed say compliance mandates have a direct impact on procurement decisions. Security managers also appreciate audit logging features that are compliance-ready for long-term tracking.
Clear rules for credential access are also essential to maintaining the integrity of the platform. Automated credential rotation also provides critical security for sensitive enterprise network assets. The need for advanced secrets management features remains very high at all levels of the organization.
Structured Approach for Seamless Security Integration
As mid-market organizations improve their internal security posture, it creates unique operational challenges. Interestingly, 67% of mid-market firms have 20 or fewer privileged accounts to manage. So, these organizations have a great place to begin phased PAM adoption. Security experts say IT teams should focus on system usability and software integration. Ensure access protocols align with existing identity workflows to ultimately drive total PAM adoption success.
