NextNav and Tiami Networks Collaborate to Protect Against Unmanned Aircraft System Threats

NextNav Inc. announced a strategic partnership with Tiami Networks today to advance counter-drone security technology. Tiami Networks joins NextNav as a key sensing ecosystem partner for 5G-powered counter-unmanned aircraft system (UAS) detection solutions. Consequently, the collaboration leverages NextNav’s ground-based 3D positioning architecture to deliver wide-area threat detection capabilities.

The joint effort focuses on integrated sensing and communications within the company’s licensed Lower 900 MHz band spectrum. Furthermore, this framework allows existing wireless infrastructure to perform dual functions without degrading overall network capacity.

 “NextNav is excited to partner with Tiami Networks as it continues to evaluate how 5G-powered sensing can support counter-UAS detection and other mission-critical airspace and ground-based applications,” said David Gell, Vice President of Business Development at NextNav. “The need for longer range situational awareness has never been more urgent as drones continue to threaten large-scale events, critical infrastructure, and government and military facilities including airports.”

To validate the technology, NextNav established a dedicated testbed in Santa Clara County, California. The site evaluates long-range 900 MHz sensing while providing continuous, highly accurate 3D positioning data. Therefore, engineers can monitor airspace activity while maintaining uninterrupted baseline operational data.

Furthermore, NextNav expands its 5G PNT Network to support national defense initiatives and civil aviation security. Combining low-band spectrum with integrated sensing and communications gives security authorities an economical path toward automated airspace protection.

In addition, modern military facilities require advanced 3D geolocation solutions to counter rogue drone activities. Deploying scalable RF platforms mitigates emerging aerial threats before they impact civilian populations.

During this time, NextNav is continually conducting tests on its 5G-based UAS detection technology in places where there is higher risk. Using a combination of positioning, timing, and sensing technology in one, NextNav is able to offer a good level of security protection for critical infrastructure.
