OpenAI has enhanced ChatGPT’s deep research functionality by introducing direct integration with popular cloud platforms—Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive. This move streamlines how professionals access, query, and analyze documents, eliminating the need to toggle between multiple apps.

The update allows users to issue natural language prompts like, “Show me the latest customer feedback deck,” enabling ChatGPT to pull relevant files directly from cloud storage. Similarly, developers can retrieve data from GitHub using specific queries such as “Where’s the backend logic for image uploads?”

OpenAI developed this feature after identifying a recurring challenge: users frequently switched between apps while researching. The new connectors resolve this by embedding external data access directly into the ChatGPT interface.

The system functions through a secure authentication process, requiring users to grant permission before accessing any third-party platform. To activate, users choose the Deep Research option, select a data source, and complete the sign-in steps. Admins can manage access through the ChatGPT settings under “Connected apps.”

Currently, ChatGPT supports connectors for Box, Dropbox, GitHub, Microsoft OneDrive, and Microsoft SharePoint. However, access is limited to Team, Education, and Enterprise subscribers, with availability for these tiers labeled as “Coming soon.” Plus and Pro users don’t have access, and additional restrictions apply in regions like the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK.

OpenAI assures users that no files are synced or stored. Instead, the system performs live searches using keyword-based queries, preserving each platform’s native privacy settings and permissions.
